In 1918 France, Captain Flagg (James Cagney) commands a disreputable company of Marines, and his new top sergeant is his old friendly enemy Quirt (Dan Dailey). The two men soon become rivals for the favors of the innkeeper's daughter Charmaine (Corinne Calvet) -- but their romantic and comedic escapades are interrupted by the grim realities of war when the company is ordered to the front lines.
