Theatrical promoter Bob Harrison (Franchot Tone) loves Mona (Jean Harlow), but he cannot compete with wealthy socialite Ned Riley (William Powell) when Riley buys every seat in the theater to be able to watch Mona's performance alone. Ned and Mona wed, but Ned's family rejects Mona as a shameless gold digger. Torn between his family's rejection and his love for Mona, Ned commits suicide -- leaving Mona to put her life and career back together.
