Having seeing my second film written and directed by Ms Joanna Hogg, 'UNRELATED', I have come to quickly realize that her writing and whatever there is of plot in her films do not strike a very resounding chord with me. With ARCHIPELAGO and now with UNRELATED I feel I am witness to some group reality show which I truly do not want to watch...
(Just imagine a coterie of friends being away on holiday, this time in Italy, as one of the friends quite literally films the whole goings on of the day, the ups, the downs, a few laughs some tough arguments etc.) This is the nature of her films., some external person filming the events of this 'Italian Vacanza.' There are periods of very long silences, much smoking, much drinking... but nothing really happens except that in UNRELATED we have a few personal confessions, as it were. This very open sort cinéma vérité, if that's what it is, is simply not my idea of great film. Within 10 minutes at most I become very complacent and bored.
