Tall: The American Skyscraper and Louis Sullivan

    2006     Documentary
    USA
    1h 19min

Starting at the turn of the last century, visionary architect Louis Sullivan (mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright) built rhapsodies in brick, steel, and terracotta. Now, Sullivan finds in Manfred Kirchheimer a filmmaking champion perfectly matched to capture the beauty of his work. Telling the story of Sullivan and his nearest rival, Daniel Burnham (architect of the Flatiron Building), Kirchheimer's impassioned film uses both original and archival materials to describe the rise of the skyscraper itself, a riotous outburst of creative exuberance that changed city life forever.
