1918: A French Navy-ship docks on the island of Fenua Poerava in the Polynesian archipelago. On board is Captain Alfred de Morsac. On the island, Morsac befriends a young child named Reia, the prince of the Island. Moeata, Reia's mother, although part French herself does not trust Morsac and sees him as nothing but "a mangy European dog".
